La Crosse County DA declines to pursue election bribery charges against Musk

La Crosse County District Attorney Timothy Gruenke announced his office will not file election bribery charges against Elon Musk. The decision comes after an investigation into allegations that Musk offered to pay a fine for former La Crosse County Board supervisor David West, contingent on West's resignation from his position. This resignation would have prevented West from voting on a local referendum concerning a potential tax increase to fund improvements at the county jail.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission had referred the matter to the district attorney's office. Prosecutors are responsible for determining whether evidence supports criminal charges under state law, which prohibits offering or accepting inducements to influence an election or a candidate's actions. The DA's declination means no further legal action will be taken by the county related to these specific allegations.
