Spanish space minister: Elon Musk's control of 2/3 of all operating satellites motivated Spain's Iris2 investment

Spain's investment in the European Iris2 satellite constellation is partly driven by concerns over Elon Musk's significant control over existing satellite technology. According to Spain's Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Spain is seeking to bolster European autonomy in space communications. Musk's company, SpaceX, operates a substantial portion of all currently functioning satellites, primarily through its Starlink internet constellation.

This concentration of satellite assets in private hands, particularly those of a single individual and company, raises questions about strategic independence and the potential for geopolitical leverage. The Iris2 initiative, a European Commission project, aims to create a secure and sovereign satellite communication system to complement existing private networks and ensure reliable connectivity for governmental and critical infrastructure needs across the European Union.
